GEORGE TOWN: The ear- piercing ceremony for children in the Indian community is a dying tradition.
In a bid to revive the ritual, the Penang Hindu Youth Council yesterday held a ceremony where some 101 boys and girls underwent the traditional ceremony at the Nattukottai Chettiars Temple in Jalan Air Terjun here.
Each child was later given a pair of gold earrings.
Temple chairman R. Ramani said ear piercing among the Indian community marked an important event in a child's life.
He said the community believed that piercing the lower lobes of the ear had the benefits of an acupuncture as well as distracting evil spirits.
Other significant rituals practised by the community include a naming ceremony (Namakarna) for a newborn, the child's first trip out (Nishkarmana) and the child's first taste of solid food (Annaprasana).
Also present to officiate the event was state Gerakan assistant secretary Goh Kheng Sneah, state MIC chairman Datuk P.K. Subbaiyah and Malaysian Hindu Youth Council president K. Rasa Selvan.
Ramani said this was the first time such a symbolic ceremony was held in the state.
