Sore over hall rental charge of RM100

Star, Saturday August 28, 2010

A Barisan Nasional co-ordinator was shocked to discover that a RM100 fee was charged to anyone wanting to use the Taman Desa Permai Indah community hall in Sungai Dua, Penang.
Goh Kheng Sneah, who is Batu Uban BN co-ordinator, said the fee was charged by the state-appointed Community Development and Security Committee (JKKK), adding that the previous state government had never charged such a fee.

“I was only told about the fee before presenting 100 bags of 5kg rice and cash aid to the less fortunate from Batu Uban at the hall which was built in 2003.

“This event is to provide aid for the festive period, and they are charging a fee for it,” he said in his speech before the event yesterday.

Goh said the hall is meant for everyone, and it is not right to charge a fee especially when such an event is being carried out.

The event was organised by the Bayan Baru Kemas and Bayan Baru Welfare Association. Also present was Bayan Baru BN co-ordinator David Yim.

The organisers had allocated RM25,000 to provide aid for 300 people at the Batu Uban, Sungai Ara and Pantai Jerejak areas. The aid presentation for the other two areas will be held soon.

Yim said although Barisan lost at the Bayan Baru constituency seat in the last election, the leaders have never forgotten the needs of the rakyat.

Batu Uban assemblyman S. Raveentharan said the RM100 fee was not a lot and it was being put to good use as the money collected would be used to fund the JKKK’s welfare activities and also for the upkeep of the hall.
