Penang Gerakan has slammed Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng for trying to claim credit over a so-called plan by BlackBerry smartphone maker, Research in Motion (RIM), to set up a manufacturing facility in Malaysia.

Penang Gerakan secretary Goh Kheng Sneah said there was no such plan by RIM to set up the facility or plant in Penang or Malaysia.

“According to the Ministry of International Trade and Ministry, RIM is only considering a local outsourcing partner in Malaysia. But Lim jumped the gun and announced that RIM would set up a manufacturing plant in Penang, thus creating confusion among the people,” said Goh at a press conference today at the Penang Gerakan headquarters.

Goh, who is also Barisan Nasional coordinator for Batu Uban, said Lim wanted to make the people happy but over a false alarm. “He also thinks he can claim credit over the matter.”

Goh said Lim should fully understand and realize that his announcement on this issue, based on a newspaper report would have great implications as well as economic impact in the Asean region.

“Lim said he obtained the news from a newspaper report. As Chief Minister, he has the official government resources and should have verified the facts before making such an announcement,” Goh added.

Lim had on July 15 called a Press conference to announce that he had come across a news report that RIM would be setting up a manufacturing plant in Penang.

Miti secretary-general Datuk Dr Rebecca Fatima Sta Mari has since clarified that the Canadian technology firm was highly considering a local outsourcing partner in Malaysia.

“As such they will not require a manufacturing licence as it is a business-to-business arrangement,” Rebecca said in a statement on Saturday.

In a lighter note at the Press conference today, Goh asked reporters “what is a BlackBerry and what is a BlueBerry?”

Goh said they were two different fruits. However, it seemed Lim did not even know how to differentiate between the two.

To much laughter from journalists present, Goh likened the two fruits to one as a manufacturing facility and one as an outsourcing partner.
