MARY Tan, a Silver Jubilee Home For The Aged resident, will soon be able to enjoy eating again, thanks to the one-off RM500 Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) aid.

Tan, 74, when met at the home in Penang, said she would use RM400 to buy a new pair of dentures so that she would be able to eat whatever she wanted.

“For the past few months, my dentures have been loose,” she said.

She was among 48 home resi-dents who received the aid from Batu Uban Barisan Nasional co-ordinator Goh Kheng Sneah and Bayan Baru MCA secretary David Yim yesterday.

Under Budget 2012, the Government allocated a one-off cash assistance of RM500 for households with a monthly income of RM3,000 and below under the scheme.

Tan said she would use the balance to buy new clothes and shoes for Chinese New Year.

Another recipient Yong Siew Lian, 78, who was wheelchair-bound, said she was happy to receive the money.
She said she would use the money to buy Chinese New Year items.

Goh said the 48 recipients were the first batch of 197 home residents receiving the aid.

“The distribution was meant for the convenience of the home residents, especially those who are bedridden.”

Yim said he and Goh also gave out 15 boxes of mandarin oranges to the home residents.

Rela platoon does its bid for flood victims

Saturday December 31, 2011 STAR

THE Sungai Dua Rela platoon in Penang donated RM2,888 to assist flood victims in Thailand.

The money was raised from among its 123 active members.

Batu Uban Barisan Nasional co-ordinator Goh Kheng Sneah said Rela members embarked on the donation drive as they wanted to do more than just providing security services for the society.

“The Sungai Dua platoon provided security for 580 activities this year, which is an amazing feat considering they are mere volunteers holding full-time jobs.

“Now, they are even giving a helping hand to our neighbouring country in their time of need which is really commendable,” he said.

Earlier, he presented a cheque for the said amount to Penang St John Ambulance treasurer K.H. Wong during the platoon’s annual dinner at its base in Sungai Nibong.

Goh, who is a Rela honorary lieutenant-colonel, said the money would be used to help flood victims especially in south and north of Bangkok.

Also present during the event on Wednesday were state Rela director Romli Ibrahim and Bayan Baru Barisan Nasional coordinator David Yim.

Romli praised the platoon for its charitable initiative.

He also expressed hope that the membership in Rela would increase next year through programmes such as 1Sukarelawan 1Rumah.

As of early 2011, there are more than 2.5 million registered Rela members nationwide.
