THE Sungai Dua Rela platoon in Penang donated RM2,888 to assist flood victims in Thailand.
The money was raised from among its 123 active members.
Batu Uban Barisan Nasional co-ordinator Goh Kheng Sneah said Rela members embarked on the donation drive as they wanted to do more than just providing security services for the society.
“The Sungai Dua platoon provided security for 580 activities this year, which is an amazing feat considering they are mere volunteers holding full-time jobs.
“Now, they are even giving a helping hand to our neighbouring country in their time of need which is really commendable,” he said.
Earlier, he presented a cheque for the said amount to Penang St John Ambulance treasurer K.H. Wong during the platoon’s annual dinner at its base in Sungai Nibong.
Goh, who is a Rela honorary lieutenant-colonel, said the money would be used to help flood victims especially in south and north of Bangkok.
Also present during the event on Wednesday were state Rela director Romli Ibrahim and Bayan Baru Barisan Nasional coordinator David Yim.
Romli praised the platoon for its charitable initiative.
He also expressed hope that the membership in Rela would increase next year through programmes such as 1Sukarelawan 1Rumah.
As of early 2011, there are more than 2.5 million registered Rela members nationwide.
