Indonesian minister remembered

STAR, Wednesday December 17, 2008
FORMER Indonesian Foreign Minister Ali Alatas can be best remembered for helping to boost tourism and trade between Penang and Medan.

Gerakan president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said Ali played a pivotal role in convincing the Indonesian Government to waive the exit levy for Indonesian travellers coming to the state in the late 90s.

He said when the exemption took effect, there was an immediate jump in the number of Indonesians coming to Penang for holidays, medical treatment and education.

“Indonesians travelling by air and by sea out of the country had to pay an exit levy of 1mil rupiah by air and 500,000 rupiah by sea.
