THE Federal Government gave out RM58mil in welfare aid to needy Penangites last year, said Bayan Baru Barisan Nasional coordinator David Yim Boon Leong.
He said the money, channelled through the state Welfare Department, was more than three times the RM14.3mil given out by the state government for its senior citizens appreciation programme last year.
“Although the amount was far more than that given out by the Penang government, we in Barisan have never created a big hoo-ha over this. In fact, we have been handing out aid for so many years.
“The amount given out to each needy individual was between RM100 and RM450 monthly,” Yim said during an aid presentation organised by the Bayan Baru Community Development Department (Kemas) at Balai Rakyat Sungai Ara on Wednesday.
Cash aid totalling RM18,600 was given out to 137 needy folk at the event in conjunction with Ramadan.
Batu Uban Barisan Nasional coordinator Goh Kheng Sneah said the Penang government was still harping on the RM100 it gives out under the senior citizen’s appreciation programme although the programme was launched last year.
Bayan Baru Kemas senior supervisor Roslan Mohamed said the 137 recipients, including single mothers and children, were from the Bayan Baru parliamentary constituency.
The recipients also received a hamper each containing essential items worth RM50.
Besides Yim and Goh, others who chipped in for the event using their allocation were Pantai Jerejak Barisan coordinator Wong Mun Hoe and Batu Maung Barisan coordinator Datuk Abdul Rahim Saibu.
Other sponsors were Koperasi Tunas Muda Sungai Ara Berhad, Koperasi Sungai Nibong Berhad and Suiwah Corporation Berhad.
